Magazine Feature: Eastbourne Trackstar Marathon

I was asked to write a feature about Eastbourne Trackstar Marathon for Outdoor Fitness magazine:
Eastbourne Trackstar Marathon is a rather intriguing affair. The course provides stunning views of the South Downs in the first half, and views of open parkland in the second. It’s fast, flat, and you won’t have to scale any of those hills on the horizon. “What’s wrong with that?” you might ask. Well, you have to repeat the course 105.5 times, as the marathon stays wholly within the confines of a standard 400 metre athletics track!
The track at Eastbourne Sports Park, home to Eastbourne Rovers Athletic Club, is a modern facility that may be more suitable than you think for marathon running. You have access to facilities every lap, you can grab a drink every lap and you’re even allowed to set up your own personal aid station along the back straight. Bring supporters then you’ll have your own cheer squad for the whole marathon too! It’s a perfect running surface, and with the all request playlist booming out (choose your song on the entry form), you’re almost guaranteed to be spurred on to a fast time.
The organisers ‘We Run They Run I Run’ (Richard, Zoe, Debbie & Russell, all runners themselves) have chosen to put on something they would quite like to have a go at themselves one day, and are hoping to appeal to likeminded runners who want to run a challenging but fun marathon. So far the event has attracted runners from all over England and Wales, and even some international runners. The emphasis is running should be for everyone, so the marathon has a generous 7 hour cut off.
To keep count, a professional chip timing company is on hand, for the first time in 2019 there will be a display screen to feedback runner’s progress.
What is nice about events in one location, is that runners tend to hang around after the finish to support their fellow athletes. With free tea and coffee for participants, and a wide selection of homemade cakes for sale, including vegan options, why wouldn’t you hang around?
